Music + computers = happiness: Musaic, June 8

Posted May 16 - Musaic, 7:30 p.m., Friday, June 8, showcases talented students in the Edmonds Community College Digital Music Program for an innovative multi-media performance at the Black Box Theatre in Mukilteo Hall, Edmonds Community College, 20000 68th Ave. W, Lynnwood. Musaic is free and open to the public. A $7 suggested donation supports music scholarships.

Community invited to "Finding Kind" June 1 in Everett

Posted May 16 - The Washington State Youth Leadership Summit will present “Finding Kind,” a free community event from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday June 1 at the Everett Performing Arts Center, 2710 Wetmore Ave. in downtown Everett. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.The event includes a screening of the documentary film and an interactive community dialog on bullying led by the filmmakers, Lauren Parsekian and Molly Stroud. The event is free and open to all who would like to attend.

LEAF School noted for Earth Day work on Gold Park

Posted May 10 - On Sunday, April 22, the Edmonds Community College LEAF School celebrated Earth Day at Gold Park. Over 120 people turned out to help renovate the park’s trails and remove invasive plants. Himalayan Blackberry, English Ivy and Yellow Arch Angel were removed and thrown into a pile that grew to over 6 feet high by the end of the day. The LEAF School students then led teams of volunteers in re-planting native shrubs throughout the park.

College hosts international film festival May 29-31

Posted May 9 - The fourth annual Edmonds Community College International Film Festival starts Tues., May 29, with a focus on “Languages of Laughter, Cultures through Comedy,” in the Black Box Theatre on campus, 20000 68th Ave. W, Lynnwood. The films are free and open to the public.

Community college board to consider tuition rates

Posted May 9 - OLYMPIA, Wash. – The State Board for Community and Technical Colleges will meet Wednesday, May 9, from noon to 5:15 p.m. and Thursday, May 10, from 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake.

Efficient for students: Our college cuts its energy costs by 17 percent

Posted May 3 - Edmonds Community College made energy efficiency updates on campus and took the Snohomish County PUDs pledge to reduce its energy costs by 10 percent in 2011 — and we did it! Actually, our costs were down 17.4 percent from our average for last year! State Jobs Act funding helped the college pay for upgrades such as retrofitting a main boilers to save on gas costs and installing energy efficient lighting in college parking lots. As state funding for higher education has declined, energy efficiency has been one of the college's strategies to reduce costs in ways that won't be felt by students.

Edmonds CC library served 2,818 students in one day

Posted May 2 - Edmonds Community College participated in “Snapshot: One Day in the Life of Washington’s Libraries”. This statewide project gathered statistics, stories, and photographs to illustrate the importance of libraries for Washington’s citizens.

Edmonds Community College accounting student honored

Posted Apr 20 - Edmonds Community College student Siyu Lu, 22, of Lynnwood is one of seven nationwide recipients of a $1,000 scholarship from the Teachers of Accounting at Two-Year Colleges (tactcy.org), and the first from Washington State.

College awarded Community College Initiative funds

Posted Apr 18 - Edmonds Community College has received an award of $1,699,855 from the U.S. Department of State to administer the Community College Initiative program to provide professional training and degrees to students from South Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Near East. Edmonds Community College, as the lead college, has partnered with Whatcom Community College and Pierce College to create the Northwest Community College Initiative (NWCCI) to provide the educational programs stipulated by the cooperative agreement.

Edmonds CC President Joins College Spark Washington

Posted Apr 13 - Edmonds Community College President Dr. Jean Hernandez is one of three new trustees named to the College Spark Washington Board of Trustees. College Spark Washington is a private foundation located in Seattle, which supports college readiness and retention for low-income students. Edmonds Community College received a $213,238 (over three years) Community Grant from College Spark for the Center for Efficacy and Resiliency to offer professional development for staff at Scriber Lake, an alternative public school in Edmonds.

Music student Calvin Hanson wins Jack Stone Award for composition

Posted Apr 12 - Congratulations to music student Calvin Hanson! He'll soon be on his way to Texas to hear his composition performed at the Jack Stone Music Concert April 24 at Northwest Vista College. Calvin is the winner of the Jack Stone Award in Northwest Vista College's third annual musical-score contest for community college students and his composition was one of three chosen from across the United States to be performed at the concert. All three students receive recognition and cash prizes, but Hanson brings home the Jack Stone Award!
