Free tax prep and e-file at Edmonds Community College
Posted Jan 24 - Every year Edmonds Community College offers free income tax return preparation and e-filing to US citizens and residents with incomes of less than $49,000. This service is sponsored by an IRS program called, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA). Volunteers are taught using IRS training guidelines and are IRS certified to provide confidential tax preparation to qualified taxpayers. Last year, Edmonds Community College helped more than 400 campus and community members file their tax returns.

English instructor's poem honored by humanities association
Posted Nov 29 - Edmonds Community College English instructor Holly Hughes received the 2011 Crosscurrents Award for Poetry from the Washington Community College Humanities Association (WCCHA) for her poem "Re-reading Tu Fu Thirty Years Later." The award was presented at the WCCHA conference in October.
Community college trustees support governor’s call for new revenue for higher education
Posted Nov 23 - The Trustees Association for Community and Technical Colleges (TACTC) has endorsed Governor Gregoire’s proposal to raise the sales tax by a half cent to buy back the proposed cuts in higher education.
Anthropology instructor named Conservation Teacher of the Year
Posted Nov 17 - Dr. Thomas W. Murphy Chair of the Anthropology Department at Edmonds Community College was selected for the Washington Association of Conservation Districts’ Conservation Teacher of the Year Award. The award recognizes a K-12, college, technical, or trade school educator in Washington State. He will now be considered for the National Association of Conservation Districts award. Murphy was honored November 14 at the King Conservation District annual meeting as their Educator of the Year and will be honored November 30 at the State Conservation Commission meeting at Suncadia Lodge in Cle Elum.
America's Strongest Woman works at Edmonds Community College
Posted Nov 17 - Kristyn Whisman, Edmonds Community College's Dean of Corrections Education at the Monroe Correctional Complex, has competed for and won the title of America's Strongest Woman in the Lightweight Women's Division of the North American Strongman (NAS) Nationals for the third time.
Lynnwood City Council approves emergency overnight sheltering
Posted Nov 16 - The City of Lynnwood will open its council chambers for overnight sheltering in freezing weather. The shelter is open to men, women and families requiring overnight sheltering. Evening and morning meals will be provided. When activated, those requiring overnight sheltering will gather at Lynnwood’s City Hall, 19100 44th Ave. W Lynnwood, at 7 p.m., Monday-Thursday, 6 p.m., Friday and Saturday, and 5 p.m. on Sunday evenings. The Lynnwood Library Gallery, 19200 44th Avenue West, is free to the public, and presented by the Lynnwood Arts Commission. Gallery hours are: 10 a.m.-9 p.m., Monday-Thursday; 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Friday; 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday; and 1-5 p.m., Sunday. Closed on national holidays. Call 425.670.5519.

Posted Nov 9 - Love working with infants and toddlers? Edmonds Community College's Early Childhood Education department now offers a short Infant and Toddler Certificate of Completion. The certificate can be completed by taking 19 credits of courses including a field practicum. Advising is required. Call the department for more information and to make an advising appointment. Start this winter with Applied Child Development, ECE 110 and Activities with Infants and Toddlers, ECE 249. Winter quarter registration starts Nov. 21. Classes run Jan. 3-March 19.
Women's Soccer Wins North Region Playoff Battle 1-0
Posted Nov 8 - Edmonds Community College Women's Soccer has made the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) Conference playoffs. In their match versus Shoreline, with the playoffs on the line and about a minute left to play in the game Edmonds CC's Ashley Desharnais scored the game winning goal to advance the Tritons into the first round of the NWAACC playoffs. They will play 1 p.m., Wed., Nov. 9 at Spokane Community College. Triton's Men's Soccer are the North Region Champions. Quarterfinal playoffs will be 7 p.m., Nov. 12 at Triton Field. Go Tritons!

With great sadness: Longtime employee dies
Posted Nov 2 - The college and Business Division noted the passing of one of its first hires in the Office Administration (now Business Information Technology) Department. Carol Dreger, a longtime employee of college who retired in 2005, died October 29. "Carol was a pioneer in multiple areas of communication and technology. She truly had a huge and lasting impact on Edmonds Community College," said Edmonds Community College Vice President of Workforce Development and Training Susan Loreen.
Triton Field opens Sat., Oct. 29 for soccer
Posted Oct 28 - Join the Women's and Men's Soccer Teams as they host Skagit Valley College 1:45 p.m., Sat., Oct. 29 and play their for the first games on the new multi-use turf Triton Field. The new field will be used for intercollegiate sports — soccer, baseball, and softball — student recreation and intramural sports, physical education classes, and will be available for community rentals. The construction of the field, to replace the college's grass baseball field, was made possible by associated student fees.
English faculty read at Hugo House Nov. 1
Posted Oct 28 - English instructors Amanda Laughtland and Marcia Woodard, alumni of the University of Washington's Master of Fine Arts in English/Creative Writing program, will read 8 p.m., Tuesday, November 1 at Richard Hugo House, 1634 11th Ave. on Capitol Hill in Seattle as part of the Castalia Reading Series sponsored by the University of Washington's graduate creative writing program.
